CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP, #5! (as it actually happened) WITH ATTACHMENT!!

MEMORY VERSE:  I Corinthians 12:4-5, “There are different kinds of
gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are different kinds of working, but
the same God works all of them in all men,” I Corinthians 12:4-5.

We have completed our discussion of the GIFTS listed in Ephesians
chapter 4.  We are now discussing another list of GIFTS in I
Corinthians chapter 12.  We may think of these gifts as a little
different from the gifts in Ephesians 4.  Remember that the gifts in
Ephesians 4 were PEOPLE given TO the church for its growth and
teaching.  The gifts in I Corinthians 12 seem to be GIFTS given to
CERTAIN PEOPLE for special work WITHIN the Church.  Obviously, BOTH
types of gifts are given for the growth into maturity of the Church.
Let us read I Corinthians 12:4-11 again.

-There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are
different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different
kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.  Now
to each the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to
another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to
another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that
one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in
different kinds of tongues, and to
still another the interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work
of one and the same Spirit, and He gives them to each one, just as He

It is true that Christians do not all agree in our understanding of
this list of gifts in I Corinthians 12.  The list in Ephesians 4 is
easier to understand and most Christians agree about the understanding
of that list.   Therefore, we have a difficult job to try to
understand this new list in I Corinthians 12.  Let us work together in
humility, asking the Holy Spirit to be our teacher and guide us into
all the truth we need to understand.

We plan to discuss briefly these 9 gifts:
(1) the message of wisdom, I Corinthians 12:8a
(2) the message of knowledge, I Corinthians 12:8b
(3) faith, I Corinthians 12:9a
(4) healing, I Corinthians 12:9b
(5) miraculous powers, I Corinthians 12:10a
(6) prophecy, I Corinthians 12:10b
(7) distinguishing between spirits, I Corinthians 12:10c
(8) speaking in different kinds of tongues, I Corinthians 12:10d
(9) the interpretation of tongues, I Corinthians 12:10e

In Lesson 3 we discussed The MESSAGE OF WISDOM and THE MESSAGE OF
KNOWLEDGE.  In Lesson 4 we discussed THE MESSAGE OF FAITH and THE

(5) The Gift of Miraculous Powers,
I Corinthians 12:10a another miraculous powers...-

I  believe very strongly that God can do ANYTHING.  I believe that He
sometimes DOES do amazing and miraculous things.  It is very hard to
keep the miracles of God quiet.  Miracles are very exciting!  Miracles
are SENSATIONAL things!   God seems to be holding back many of His
miracles until the end of time.  But not ALL.  Jesus did some miracles
when he walked the earth, healing, changing water to wine, etc.  Peter
and John prayed for  a lame man to be healed and it happened in Acts
3.  Even Paul, when he was finding wood for a fire and a poisonous
snake bit into his hand and hung on there, flung the snake off his
hand and into the fire and felt no sickness or pain.  The Apostle
John, when he was put in prison on the Island of Patmos, received the
miraculous Revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ which is the last book
in our Bible.

Amazing and miraculous as the REVELATION to John was, the THINGS that
would happen in the future are MUCH MORE MIRACULOUS!  But what greater
miracle is there than this:  To find a man enslaved to liquor or sex
or drugs, filthy dirty of body and of mouth, doped up so long that his
mind has been effected, introduce that man to the Son of God, our Lord
Jesus Christ, and watch as He is BORN AGAIN through the power of the
blood of Jesus Christ when he simply RECEIVES Jesus into His heart.

But that is not all!  God can take that same hopeless, helpless mess
of a man, half-dead and useless, and use another Christian to begin
the process of discipling him.  Soon the miracle is amazingly
advanced.  The half-dead filthy man stands before the most
well-dressed people in society and teaches the Word of God, a
completely new and different man - a thoroughly BORN AGAIN man who is
clean and pure because of God's forgiveness, a whole and useful man,
one who loves his family and walks with God as an example to anybody
in the world.  THAT, my friends, is the GREATEST MIRACLE in the world
and of all time!

The God, who through the great MIRACLE of raising Himself from the
dead, proves that He can do ANYTHING!  The ENTIRE New Testament is a
book of miracles.  Some people may have a special gift of doing
miracles.  Do NOT use them to put on a show or to call attention to
yourself.  ALL of following Jesus is wrapped up in miracles!  Our God
has ALL POWER!  (Matthew 28:18)  He does miracles today when He wants
to do them.  We do not command Him to do anything.  HE has ALL power!
Each of us who follows Jesus is a Miracle and God can do ANYTHING with
you and me that He chooses.

We still hear about God doing something miraculous in places and among
people who do not know much about God.  Especially we hear about
DREAMS where Jesus appears to someone who does not know about Him.  He
calls them to Himself and very often they find a missionary or someone
who can tell them how to come to Jesus.  The age of miracles is not
OVER.  We still have many miracles done by God today.

And this scripture makes it seem as though there may be some people
with a special gift of doing miracles in Jesus' name.  If you are one
of those people, I say to you, -Use your gift carefully and
prayerfully.  Do NOT boast!  Be humble before God.  Be sure that you
tell everyone that it is GOD who does the miracles and NOT YOU.-  I
think this gift might be a very difficult gift to live with.  Anyone
who has this as a special gift will probably pay a price of suffering
and tears.

We will continue the study of the Gifts in I Corinthians 12 in the next lesson.

1.  Look at the first 5 gifts in I Corinthians 12:4-10.  Do NOT go
beyond verse 10.  What do you want to say about the first 5 gifts?
What questions do you have?

2.  Talk about the difference between KNOWLEDGE and WISDOM.

3.  Talk about FAITH and HEALING.  Do they ALWAYS go together?  Do
they SOMETIMES go together?

4.  Until now, what do we know about the gift of "miraculous powers."
Do YOU thinkYOU have the gift of "miraculous powers"?
Why do you think so?

5.  Think about this statement:  TRUE KNOWLEDGE THAT COMES FROM GOD
MAY NOT ALWAYS AGREE WITH THE BIBLE!  What do you think about that
statement?  Please explain your answer.

6.  What do you think about THIS statement:  THE GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE MAY
Do you agree?  or disagree?  Explain why you answer as you do.

7.  Explain this statement:  It takes a lot of faith to do any work
for God.

8.  What is the greatest miracle of all?  Why do we say it is changing
a great sinner into a great follower of Jesus?  Explain all you can.
